Melancholia

It rained
to-day
only
while
I was
out in
it.

My teacher always used to scold me for being too wordy and verbose, for fumbling towards purpose and meaning and never quite saying what I wanted to say. He said "true poetry" was clearly cut and didn't overreach itself. It is not a struggle against the words. It is the feeling itself rather than an attempt at painting the scene to evoke said feeling. I don't know that I completely agree, but I respect that gift....and envy it, too.
