To Know the World

By Chameleon

Wander the streets for hours upon hours
with no place to be and no place to go.
Feel yourself smile at the world
and in return, feel it scorn back at you

Wander the streets alone in your head
and think, think for a moment, just think
walk the long curvy pavement through
the back streets of dark alleyways

Watch the sun fade comfortably past
the horizon of warm chimney smoking homes
admire, the glass chalices hung brightly
in the dark chasm of the universe above

Sit and wonder why the man across the road
stares at you as you sit, and think and wonder
what it is that intrigues him about you,
and then care for a moment, then don't care

Make a choice to bed with the cold pavement
below, or call an old friend who's couch
is much warmer then he, tempted to
accept an invitiation from the cold...

Then change your mind, and keep walking
watch the backs of the folks around you
fade away into their doorways and watch
the porch light flicker out moments later

Know, for once in your life that you are truly alone

And then think, and think some more, just think...
