Warrior Returns Home Alive
By Mithiras
He left carrying his sheild and sword,
dressed from head to toe in glittering armour
it was completely polished so that it would shine
he was a true warrior one who would save us
he would not let us die "we will survive" he said
He left fully knowing the consequences before him
the deadly enemy seeming to be a million to them
there was only one way to save us all he thought
war was to be called and he and others would sail off
into the horizon, will I see her again he thought
The night before was as peaceful and calm as ever
as if the world held her breath before it all started
the crystal white moon was full and a owl flew by
was this owl a sign from Odin up high? A portant of safety?
smiling he hugged his son and kissed his wife goodbye
On the ship there were fourty warriors
brave as any, and veterans with years behind them
they were just like the warrior, fighting for their lives
they all had children, lands and wives
but some of them may never return from the land where they'll die
The fleet approached sighting the enemy
they were outnumber three to one but they had the advantage
they drove their ships into the shore crushing the enemy's lines
gripping his sword he touched its enchanted hilt
kissing the steel he set out to do the God's will
The battle fury came to him, like a passing storm
it clouded his judgement but he fought like a boar
he sword swinging precisely cutting down his foes
his roar was mighty as if he was the one named Thor
attacking like a monster again and again
The battle was slowly ending after men became tired
there was no where to run unless they were cowards
this was where they needed to stand against the onslaught
but no matter what they did the Warrior fought onwards
killing any man in his path calling them to join him in the corpsehall
Eventually the battle rage wore off and the Warrior was left alone
he was wounded but could still go on till he died
but there was one person he needed to see
his wife whom he loved so lovingly he had to see her once more
he weakly climbed onto his feet and carried himself to home
Days passed and there was no sign of him
of the Warrior the man who was to be king
In her mind she prayed and wondered
were is my husband was he slain will we be plundered?
just a few days rides away the warrior was coming home
With the enemy defeated his country was safe
even though he was slowly dying he finally reached home
covered in blood and exhausted to his limit
he reached his town, raising his sword to the sky
he cried "Victory to us all for Odin willed it!"
He fell to the ground life rushing away from him
but still he held on for another day
he saw her face it was covered with worry and joy
she kissed him gently as if he was a little boy
he grabbed her hand and held it tight "Don't leave me tonight"
In those long lost days we still remember
the Warriors who fought and died doing was was needed
we love them, we cherish them, and we honour them
but even though no other warriors returned home that night
the one true warrior Mithiras made it home alright...

Evocative. War imagery is always interesting to see in a poem and yes definitely carries through the norse ethos.
