The noise from the machines could be heard as the door slowly opens, a female nurse is checking the data on the clipboard. The nurse looks up, smiles and sets the clipboard down she walks over a changes a few things before turning to leave.

Nurse: (softly) He is doing ok, he is still in a coma thou.

The door could be heard opening and closing as the nurse walks out. A young girl walks into view and sits in the chair next to the man in the hospital bed, the man was pale and thin. His eyes were closed, his deep brown hair stood out against the white pillow the machines beeped and the girl dropped her head as if she was praying. Her dark hair which was pulled into a pony tail fell forward. Her words are soft but could be heard.

Girl: (angrily) Why do you have to do this to me? Why do you have to lie here causing even more pain? Why can't you just end this for all of us? You're not going to get better, look at you.

She stood up and walked to the window, her eyes were full of hate as she stared out the window. Again she spoke this time her words were louder and almost hateful.

Girl: Can you hurry up and die, dad? Mom cant stand to see you like this and she is forcing me in here now. I don't want to see you like this. I want you to stop this I dont want to feel like this anymore. I dont want to feel guilty. I don't want you to live because you're only going to hold us back. You'll never walk again, you'll just lay there. You'll have to have other people take care of you and I wont do it. I will not watch you drain everything from us. You can't help us now, you're only hurting us.

She turned and looked at him. Her face was blank as she looked at her father her eyes traced over the wires and tubes attached to him, a single tear rolled down her face as she moved to his side. She leaned down and kissed him on his forehead and a single tear could be seen rolling down her cheek and land on his forehead.

Girl: (clearly in pain) I love you dad but I wont watch you die like this. Good bye.

Quickly she walked out of the room and down the hall she stopped at a water fountain and got a quick drink before going to the hospital lunch room. She walked in and grabbed a Pepsi and walked to the glass window.

Cook: What will it be today young lady? The same thing?

She simply nodded and waited as he started to grill a grilled cheese, she had eaten it every day since her father was rushed into this place two weeks ago. She smiled softly at the cook as he handed her the food with a side of fries, she stopped and picked up some grapes. She looks as if she is doing every movement without thinking about it. She walked to the cashier and pulled out $10.00 and walked away. Her meal was $9.59 and she always paid with a 10 dollar bill. She walked over to a table with two chairs and sat down, she slowly started eating. After she was done she stood up and threw her stuff into the trash and walked back to the waiting room. Inside there was a crowd of people and the T.V. was on softly but no one was watching it. She sat down and a friend of her dad's pulled out some cards and they played card game after card game. Gary looked unsure as he started to speak.

Fathers friend: (in hushed tones) How is he?

Girl: (in a normal tone) He is the same as he was yesterday and the day before. There is no getting better for him only death.

He sighed and looked up at the clock, only 2 more hours before they would be forced out of the waiting room.

5 days later

Mother: (in a high pitched tone) Get up, you are going to school today. Come on I'm running late.

Girl: (in sleepy tones) Okay.

She slowly rolled out of bed and got dressed, she did not enjoy school but it would be a change from going to the hospital every day. She packed her back pack and walked out and looked at her mother and sister, both look tired and in a daze. She picks up her note that her mother had written her and walked out of the door, her face was set and it was hard to read what she was feeling, if anything at all. In the background she could hear a phone ringing but she kept walking hoping that the bus would hurry up and come so she could escape the madness that her life had become. Loudly her mother voice could be heard calling from the front door.

Mother: (screaming) Get back here right now its your father. Get back here Nicole.

Nicole spun around and looked at her mother in confusion there is no way that her father was on that phone. She walked back and stepped into the house to she her mother and sister crying. She knew what had happened and started laughing. Both her mother and sister looked at her they have stopped crying and looked at her both with confused looks.

Nicole: (still laughing) It's about time he gave up.

She walked back into her room and set down her backpack knowing she was not going to school. She sat down on the edge of her bed and dropped her head between her hands and sighed.

Nicole: (Softly) Its about time but can I look on your dead body now?

She sighed again and looked up into her mirror. A single tear runs down her face as she looks at her cold face.

Nicole: (angrily under her breath) Crying wont fix anything. Crying wont change what has happened. Crying wont bring you back and crying won't change the fact your dead.

She got up and walked out of her room and saw her mom and sister getting their stuff, her mom turned away from her and grabbed the car keys. The ride there was silent other then the sobbing that was crying from her sister. They pulled up her mother quickly parked and jumped out of the car. She and Jessica ran into the hospital leaving Nicole behind, she knew the way. She walked in and the smell that she had become used to hit her and she slowed her pace as she drew closer to her fathers room. She could hear her mother crying and she stopped outside the door and looked in. There was her father lying still in his bed, his face was no longer white but pasty yellow. His beard stood out against the yellow skin, his eyes were still closed and the machines no longer were hooked up to him. He looked peaceful laying there. Nicole just stared at him her face was empty of emotion thou her eyes had a lost look in them.

Nicole: (softly as if she did not want to say them) Goodbye dad. You will always be my best friend.

She turned and walked away back to the waiting room. There was no reason for her to be there, she did not feel anything anymore. It was like her body had shut down she sat down in a chair and stared at the flowers. The bright pink and white flowers, so happy in their sunlight she jumped up and pushed them into a dark place in the room. She sat back down and waited for her mother to walk into the room. She just sat there waiting, waiting, and waiting.

3 years later

Time had flown by and Nicole was sitting on her bed staring at it, her head slipped down into her hands. Her body shook as silent sobs took hold of her, in front of her was the papers from the class of '06 graduation. Her dark hair fell over her hands as she cries silently. Soft music could be heard in the background and her words could barely be heard.

Nicole: (softly broken up by her crying) Why did you have to go? Why did you leave me here? Why could you not have stayed? Do you know what you have missed? Do you know what youre going to miss? I miss you so much and nothing can fix it. Why does my life have to be like this? Why cant you have just gotten checked out a day earlier? None of this would have happened. You would have been here when I played my all star game, you would have seen me enter high school, joining JROTC. Im going to be a 1st SGT and you're not going to be here to help me. You left me and I hate you for it. I hate you! You're not going to be here when I need you most. I needed you after Billy and I broke up. I need you now! I don't want to not have what others have. I want my father to walk me down the aisle when I get married. I want my kids to know their grandfather. I want you to be here dad. You missed my first prom, you missed my second , and your going to miss my third. You missed me dating. Would you have liked Billy? Chris? You have missed so much. How could you have done this? Don't you understand how much it hurt me to watch you die like that? No one understands me when I explain it. No one understands how close we were dad, you were my best friend and your gone. I'll never see you again, ever. Your going to miss my senior year dad, you won't get to see me graduate. Its not fair dad.

Still crying she lifts her head and her tears run down her face as she lies down and shuts off her light. She crying could be heard as the moonlight flooded into her room and soon everything becomes silent.
