The One

By cgracewrite

As soon as we met I knew you were the one
You had the bluest eyes I had ever seen
Your eyes were as bright as the stars in the night
A window to your soul, so I thought.
I would have given anything to win your heart.
I thought I did.
You were so attentive, such a gentleman.
I never guessed that you were ashamed of me for being sick; it was the luck of the draw.
No one ever promised us life would be fair.
It could have been you, not me
And still I would have loved you.
I found a glacier in the spot where your heart should have been.
How was I supposed to know that you expected me to be ashamed of myself?
How was I supposed to know that you were ashamed of me as well?

I agree with purr...very painful write that summons anger and disgust that a lot of us know all too well. Great write!

that second-last line is horrible in its painfulness. this aches; and i'm angry at the protagonist even though i do not know him... Powerful write.
