The Dark Company

By Silverspider

Twilight
A fat moon rising
Over a steaming swamp.
Twisted trees
Claw the black earth
Pale lights flicker
Deep below the surface
Of still, dark waters.

Tremulous ripples
Faint thunder rising
Muffled echos
Hooves striking earth
Sharp sounds of splashing.

Dark horses run
Sweat-slicked, snorting
Shadow riders, crouching low
Urge them onward
Churning the earth
Under a moon gone red.

Hoofprints slowly fill with water
Once the dark company has passed.
