Of Despair
By TheCellphoneNovelist
Despair! No depth might swallow
The abyss you draw us in.
Bow down and kiss upon me
The way to East of Eden.
The birth of all that ills on earth
Your sturdy roots arise’; for
The Fall tastes of such bitterness
That one might think:
Be there no moment more.
You lure us with your false appeal,
Your silver lining lullabies.
Whispers us of truths so wicked,
Even Gods shall have them fear.
The ones who fell to you
Never seem to be the same.
Surely and sourely, to crimson eyes
They cling, guilty all of but one cause;
To wander aimlessly, in waking sleep,
Narcotic grief numbs their ember.
To know of pain and to endure it
Longer than any other malady.
Until flames of obsession
Scorch us blue and dark the sight.
Until all of us is less in you
And in you no more us.
Thus! Embark our mind and soul with
The Divine; To know of pain,
But not become him; To know
Of sorrow, but not to plead him.
To eat from fallen fruit but
Not be swallowed by his darkness,
Nor be blinded by his grievance;
This burden is man's bliss to yield:
For creatures of great love
Must likewise be of great despair,
As what gives love her lovely scent
The cross that which she makes you bear.

I liked this piece very much, especially the notion "For creatures of great love Must likewise be of great despair..." I agree with that sentiment. It brings to mind a CS Lewis quote that went something like to be completely safe and never feel heartbreak, you have to cut yourself of from others and never be vulnerable...but if you do that, you also remove your ability to live and love, because for those things to exist, there has to be a chance taken that you will be hurt. Not the exact quote, but a close approximation. Anyway, I enjoyed this piece and am sorry I missed it when it was first posted. Ciao, T/S
