Beyond the Veil

By rwb35

How I ached to see beyond the veil
Free from petty deceits and heady betrayals
In a place where no sadness is wrought
Where madness is healed with a single thought
In a place where the clouded mirror fades
Where no fantasies are lost or mislaid
Into that dream, I longed to awaken
To find that I had not been mistaken
Or misled down the wayward path
A witless victim of your venomous wrath
Yet here I linger, a prisoner of doubt
Unable to see within or without
The truth hidden behind your haunted eyes
Have I become the one that you despise?
Is there no reprieve for my war-torn heart?
As I slowly and surely tear myself apart
The misbegotten child of timeless regret
With the pain of the shame I cannot forget
The forgotten child born of night
So far away from your healing light
In pained solitude I await your decree
A lone witness desperately wanting to believe
In an escape from this titanic pride
And all the things from myself I try to hide
A blind fool in the ever going charade
Champion to the despised, the lost, the depraved
How I stood unrepentant and unbowed
Proof given tearing through the shroud
Like the penultimate moment before the dawn
The haze of redemption so soon gone
Now I am trapped in this nightmare without end
Never to Heaven will I ascend
