When I Had Wings

By Meadowhawk

When I was young
I had wings
silvered and shining
smooth and cool

With them I soared
through boundless
cloud dappled skies
on an endless sea
of azure blue

I took wing
with my children
my uniformed boys
so handsome
and smiling

But the clouds
began to change
from white to gray
then
a frightening black

I shuddered
through
a crashing thunder
and a strange
burning metal rain

My wings
could not hold us

Down and down
spinning and turning
in a dizzying spiral
through
an ear splitting din

Lord save my children

Now I lay upon
this God forsaken patch
of barren Earth
battered
broken
and lonely

My wings are shorn
my children are lost
Father in Heaven
what have I done
