Before It's Too Late
By forgoten_wolf
when was the last time you told your mother you love her
gave her a hug
what about the father daughter moments
father and son
The last time you had a laugh with your brother
when he put the carrot up his nose
made you smile
have you ever stood up for you
wipe the tears form her eyes
when was the last time your family had dinner together as one
watched a movie
you never know the value of something until it is all gone
you could replace anything it the universe
but not the ones that are meant to be loved
though your father was a drunk
he satisfied you with your needs and wants
now his cold corpse lays across an intersection
an intersection of broken glass
broken glass and shards of metal
though your mother would get a bit cranky
she was there when no one else had understood
you take one last look upon her face
she sheds her last tear
and you shed your first
though your brother thought himself ranked above you
he protected you from harms way
change the channel to discover on the news
a shooting at a school that was his
one goodbye you never said
the sister to be thought of as the pushover
still she embraced you tightly when needed the most
you leave the hospital
with her favorite teddy bear in your trembling hand
a heart that beats no longer
you take a seat at the dinner table for many
staring at a feast prepared for a family
which once was
loneliness fed straight from the table cloth
appetite gone
excused from the table
if only
your mother was given a kiss
your father was given a hug
your brother was given a high five
your sister was given a gift
life is not to be taken for granted
not yours
nor anothers
you pray one little prayer this night
a prayer before crying to sleep
now its far too late
a goodbye
you never got to say
