Spark of light, flare of flame,
Shadows dancing, sound of rain,
Earthen floor, smell of dust,
Pulses racing, voices hushed.
Cry of panic, sob of fright,
Frantic prayers, knuckles white,
Grip of dagger, clutch of cross,
Battered, beaten, tempest-tossed.
Tears of torment, swollen eyes,
Boom of thunder, raging skies,
Hope for freedom, promise of light,
If they make it through the night.
