Raven
By Lythodaemil
Feeling the rush of air through her wings as she flies high in the sky,
Corvus takes in every inch of her wonderful surroundings. The cool, crisp
air streaks against her body as she experiences the excitement of flight
for the first time. Wind rushes past her ears leaving almost a ringing
sound to remain…
Corvus awakens to the morning Dwelling Bell. She sits up from her pile
of cloths and stretches her wings to span of seven and a half feet. The
Dwelling Bell is rung every morning, afternoon, and evening to signify
awakening, afternoon lunch, and the end of the day. Today, though, the
bell is accompanied by a small drum, which could mean only one thing: The
Walk of Sky and Wind begins today. Excitedly, Corvus runs to her closet
to grab her blue tunic. She brushes her talon-like fingers through her
red feathered head and looks into a mirror. Corvus grins excitedly and
slides down the rope from the top level of the dwelling to a lower level,
the kitchen.
The kitchen of the dwelling was about 40x40 feet and was about eight feet
high. There were the normal everyday utensils in the kitchen that would
be expected: spoons, forks, knives, etc. The fire pit in the corner had
a rabbit held above it by sticks. At the dinning table were various vegetables.
Corvus took her seat at the wooden table and began to eat her breakfast
of cooked wild rice, fried potatoes, and rabbit. Her mother glided in from
the giant opening facing outwards of the dwelling. She was carrying a bucket
full of water that she obtained from the nearby stream. She placed the
bucket down next to the fire pit and smiles at Corvus.
“Today is the big day, honey,” Corvus’ mother said while she unruffled
her beautiful emerald colored feathers. You could see the resemblance of
Corvus to her mother in their beautiful blue eyes and slim facial features.
“I am so very excited Mother! Today I venture out into the real world
on a quest to find myself and learn to take flight. It will take weeks,
months, or even years to complete this self-quest,” Corvus said as she
finished her meal. “I know some fledglings leave for the trip never to
return, but I promise you I will come back and make you proud Mother!”
She walked over to her mother and threw her arms around her, embracing
her in a hug.
The sound of the other chattering fledglings reminded Corvus it was time
to go. With one last hug from her mother she grabbed her red knapsack and
glided down several hundred feet to the ground to meet up with the rest
of her group.
After saying the prayer of the Wind Goddess, everyone departed in different
directions. Corvus stepped into the forest area with her wings tucked in
closely, so as not to hinder her walking. She walked for about three miles
to the east before she heard a crackling of twigs up ahead. She halted
and drew out a hunter’s dagger, a weapon everyone was given when heading
out on the journey. From above a large human man sailed down on top of
Corvus and knocked her to the ground, pinning her. She let out a cry of
help as the man slashed and her. Her wings instinctively flew up to cover
her body. The man in black clothing stabbed at the left wing. Yelping in
pain she slashed at the foe wildly until yells in the distance warded off
the hooded man. He jumped up into the trees and disappeared. Corvus just
lies on the ground sobbing with her injured wing, shocked at the event
that just unfolded.
From the bushes an Elvin archer, a Dwarf warrior, and a Human priest emerged.
They looked at Corvus a bit confused, most likely because none of them
had seen a Bird-like human before. After slight hesitation the human priest
rushed to Corvus’ side helped her to her feet. They exchanged formalities
and asked Corvus why she was out here. Corvus explained the Walk and her
journey to learn to fly. The group explained how they were after a man
named Predator, a rogue warrior who was evil. Corvus asked if for the time
being if she could join them. They took a moment to discuss the issue
amongst themselves and finally agreed to let Corvus tag along.
The trip to the hiding place of Predator, a large stone tower in the middle
of the High Lands, took several weeks. The group and Corvus traveled by
foot on dirt paths as well as through cities, towns, and wilderness. Corvus
had fought many battles against miscellaneous foes as her injured wing
slowly healed.
On the fifth day of the Harvest Month, they came upon the stone tower.
They all climbed the stairs to the top, where Predator awaited them. He
looked much more muscular than before when she first encountered him, but
she had also gained alot from her travels. The group rushed at him with
their weapons drawn and Predator took them all on at once. After twenty
minutes of battle, Predator was tiring out, as were the group. With the
final blow being dealt to Predator by the Warrior, the Archer was knocked
backwards off the tower. Corvus watched in horror as the archer fell. She
jumped off the side of the tower and grasped him by her talons, and then
she flew back up to the tower with the archer safely. The group cheered
as Corvus finally learned how to fly.
With Predator slain and the group returning to their homes, so did Corvus.
She arrived to her community clutching the hood of Predator in her talons
as she flew into her dwelling to greet her mother. The entire community
gathered to welcome Corvus home and made a great feast in her name. Her
accomplishments allowed her to enter adulthood with the chosen name of
“Raven.”
