A Hard and Driving Rain...

By redfurrydragon

A hard and driving rain, the window flashes white..
A dark and dismal morn, she boards her homebound flight..

She left her home and family care to see her long lost friend..
A trip for her to give support, her shoulder for to lend..

A turn he had, a loss of heart, the smile gone from his face..
A man she loved, a friend of her past, for him it was a race..

His time was short, each day was marked, the door was soon to close..
He knew he had to hear again, her voice recite his prose..

Not poem or song, not chant or sonnet, but plain and clearly spoken..
The words from their past, the ones she had said, the day her heart was broken..

She had been asked to leave from he, to join unto another..
To marry a man, to unite with him, to becomes his children’s mother..

She then said yes, and leaving her friend, her eyes were turned to ground..
I’ll love you always, our hearts are forever, our souls eternally bound..

It was a time, where he needed her, but did not want her to grieve ..
Already known, the coming end, instead he asked she leave..

The ferryman called and scheduled his ride across the river Styx..
His heart was steady, his head up high, his eyes they were transfixed..

A goal to live and prosper on, to achieve so many things..
Accomplished leader and respected man, his spirit had grown wings..

He thought he’d won, and cheated death, but times had turned again..
Thus his call, to her his love, to remember what had been..

She entered his room, all white and clean, the monitor there now dark..
He seemed so calm, relaxed and smiling, on his journey he did embark..

She’d arrived too late, her friend was gone, the words he had not heard..
She whispered close, “Please marry me, answer me with one word..”

She reached for him, and then she found, a small note held in his hand..
Her heart it sank, her crying came, unfolding that one small strand..

Her tears they fell, upon his sheet, his answer she did guess..
A kiss upon his cheek now cold, the note, it just said..yes..

She arrives at home, warm hugs and kisses, smiling despite herself..
A warm embrace, a smiling photo…her friend upon the shelf..

The rain now slight, the windows wet, small droplets collect to flows..
A quiet moment, she hears his voice, he’d heard her say his prose...
