Raining…
Laundry spinning ‘round and ‘round.
Damp misery settles within
Washer to dryer; dreariness…
 
A chipped, pink rose; rhinestone encrusted
A remnant of a barrette,
Lays hidden in the corner
On the worn, peeling countertop.
 
Grey dust and lint threads
Litter the broken floor tiles.
Empty detergent packaging
Heaped in the dirty unlined trash can.
 
The stifling heat of the machines
Competes with the cold, dankness outside.
As a lone sock sits patiently,
Waiting to join the other
Mismatched ones, upstairs…
 
Gathering up; clean, whitened garments
Smells like fresh wildflowers,
Or so the ad claims…
