Scopophobia

By WeepAnEvilLaugh

Imagine if you will, an ugly ruin of a face
Not so much ‘Hit by the ugly stick’
More like ‘Fell asleep in a forest and an ugly tree grew all over its head’
Carved in the veiniest of the veiny cheeses
But resembling a potato, whose chips would taste like spiders
It has two eyes, a nose and mouth
But they’re all competing to see who can look most like an ear

This is what greeted us all every morning
For months, hanging huge in the sky
This stratosphere visage was haunting the country
Even NASA had no idea why

Everyone was taking pictures
Our tourism saw an increase
We tried to resume with our business
And the staring just wouldn’t cease

All it did was stare
Just staring down on us all
Only staring
And nothing else

Was it God? An Alien?
Maybe Mother Nature herself
Whatever it was, to watch it too long
May prove hazardous to one’s health

The nose and mouth were unpleasant enough
But the eyes were where it lay
A pair of unwiped sphinctral portals
That kept all joy at bay

But all they did was stare
Stare down on most of us
Only staring
And so far, nothing else

Although nobody in particular
Could prove it was only them it could see
We were all convinced in ourselves
The only one it had an interest was ‘Me!’

The children all thought it had come for them
The adults thought similar too
But we had to plead ‘Be sensible
Why would it possibly want you?’

All it’s doing is staring
Staring on at least half of us
Only staring
And, I hope, nothing else

People are so paranoid
That any abnormality is because of them
It’s a form of infantile narcissism
To think it’s they it came to condemn

Some people locked themselves inside
While others tried confrontation
But it was all who pondered what they had done
To be shamed ‘fore the whole nation

But all it’s doing is staring
Though most now attempt to ignore it
Only, only staring
And if we’re lucky, nothing else

But then one morning it had gone
The land rejoiced with cheering
The hideous one had let us be
We were mistaken with all our fearing

But soon it dawned on everyone
A debt it seemed was paid
As a whole 1/10th of the population
Had somehow been mislaid.

Good good. I wanted it to start funny and then take a frightening turn. It's kinda what I want to do - make people laugh and scream. Piss themselves and then shit themselves.
