Jail Cell Markings

By Elle Amore

 New light brings hurdles.

another day to try and put waking beside you behind me.

It's been nearly a year, and yet its fresh

The count of the days marked upon me.
Not in any way as to cause alarm if you were to see me,

But in such a way that I still bleed for you daily.

The deep emeralds that stole what little common sense remained within, are all I see when there is night and nothingness.

The thought of your words in the dark bring heart-wrenching truth to the knowledge that I will never hear them again.

I would give all I have to remain in those plaid shirt nights and banana pancake mornings with you.

But I know the truth; your choice. That in your heart of hearts it was never me that you believed would be by your side.

I should have stopped myself from reading the poetry within your eyes.
