I Forgot Again

By Anonymous

 You have probably
forgotten me by now.
And in the meantime
I continue waiting for you.
I have not wanted to leave
in order that someday
if you were to want to come back
you would find me here still.

So I am still here
in the same place as always,
in the same city,
and with the same people,
so that on your return
you would find nothing different
and you would be like yesterday
and we would never again part.

Maybe I am asking
too much.
I was forgetting
that we were finished,
that you will never return,
that you never loved me.
I forgot again
that only I loved you.

Enjoy? How can one enjoy a reminder of a heartbreak this strong? How can I enjoy the resounding solidity of this poem? How can I do anything but weep at the thoughtless erosion in which I have placed myself in and yet find myself reminded day in and day out of its chains. Animals weren't meant to be caged, but sigh. He's caged me eternally. Thanks for the reminders.
