Hot and Cool

By Henry Coldnight

Once upon a time, Water met Fire.

Water said to Fire: You are

over-the-top, irrational, emotional,

and out of control!

Fire returned: Who are you

to judge me? You don't even have

a mind of you own.

Thus, Water fought Fire;

day after day, night after night,

they fought. Until one day,

they realized what they had done--

tree, mountains, and oceans,

rocks, valleys, and lava seas,

all mixed together; gone

was the original peace,

in its place, a new kind of

harmony emerged.

And all the riches now on one

so-rounded rock.

Wow, look at that! shouted Fire.

I see, what is this I'm feeling now?

Happiness? Excitement? wondered Water,

Ah, it doesn't matter. This is great.

But Wait! barked the Maker,

Don't stop now! I'm not done yet...

Oh, now it's too late...

It's a shame that

Human didn't fit on that rock

because now we are going to have to

break it

and make another one.
