Chapter 11 A Lily in the Snow

By Henry Coldnight

Out here.
There's nothing,
not anymore.

There used to be, at least,
many great things:

There were trees,
flowers, sunlight,
there was a river running happily
through this forgotten region;

There were few buildings and cars,
there was a princess and
there was a faithful knight,

but now they are all gone.

Except for him,
a young deer who had
lost his way home,
who always
chews his food
eleven times
before swallowing...

and how could they just left him
without saying
come or goodbye?

Wondering about
in the snow, he is
trying to find...
anything!
anything at all!

He's starving to death and he would eat,
he thought, anything he see now...

And then he saw
a Lily in the snow--
a flower of pure white
standing gracefully tall,
nodding at the north wind,
dancing with the snowflakes,
guarding the ones
rest in peace.

He looked at the lily
for a long while,
and then turned around
without looking back;
that kind of plant, dignity,
he'd rather die than touch

that lily in the snow.
