Ups and Downs

By Overactive Insomniac

And the rain falls
Pounding into the soiled pavement
Washing one puddle into another
Streamlets racing towards the raging underground torrents
Collecting fragments of those with little left to lose

One stands
Head raised
Sightless eyes begging to be cleansed
Blood mixed with tears
No longer burdened

Seen enough
Felt enough
Done enough
Never enough
Never again

Slowly
Sagging down
Hands cover the wounds
Too many
For others, too few

And the blood pours
Staining the glistening pavement
Washing from pool to pool
Red rivulets swirling in the water
Lost in the turbid muck

Prone
Sightless
Cold
Smiling
Enough
