Pure Loss

By The_Lady_in_the_Fire

The cramps hit

A jackhammer
in my abdomin

Then comes the blood

Left work early
Couldn't stand
And I was nearly crying

Thats how bad the pain was

Go home

My man's home
He'll make it all better
He holds me
Rubs my back
Puts a cool rag on my forehead
Gives me medicine

But I still cry
The pain is still there

THROBBING
SEARING
PAIN

Its too bad
I nearly pass out
And my man doesnt know
what to do

Back in the car

Then the clinic

"What's wrong?"
"Can you describe the pain?"
and so on...

Millions of questions
I try my best to answer
but Im still crying

In a little room
Blood drawn
Heart listened to
Belly pressed

"We need to do an ultra-sound"
"Found some interesting results in your blood work"

My man holds my hand
As a nurse runs a small tool
connected to a larger machine
As she watches the screen

"Im sorry for your loss"
"Did you know you you were pregnant?"

I shake my head
Look at my man

He's looking at the floor
The look of concern on his face
And Im looking at him

And I'm sad

Very powerful and painful and absolutely pure. I was holding my breath until the last line.
