No Will, No Might, No Life

By DeafSoldier

As I hold the trigger against my head,
I remember the orders I have done,
And my brothers, who are now lying dead,
It bothers me that I'm the only one.

I remember listening to the final roll call,
The soldier in the distance playing Taps,
And the sad bagpipes wailing loud and long.
My expression was stoic through it all.

I vividly remember their smiles,
We were together through training and war,
We used to march together for miles,
Making crude jokes about the barracks' whores.

Now they have gone to battle and have died,
I watched as their limp, lifeless bodies fell,
They died because their country called them up,
They are out of war, they are gone from hell.

My only buddies have left me alone,
I only wish that war will take my light.
The only war I have is with myself.
I have no good purpose, no will, no might.

One of my friends enlisted in the Marine Corps, and I recently found out that he committed suicide due to PTSD. He went on one tour of duty to Afghanistan before we pulled out. Rest in Peace, my friend.
