Dark Night of the Soul

By Jennanselmo

When your will has been broken, when your words turn into lies
Is there any hope for redemption if you feel forsaken in his eyes?
The shame, the guilt, the constant self depredation
Any sign of hope is a mirage of my mind’s desperation
It’s a temporary relief to a life long struggle
You thought you were safe until you found yourself amongst the rubble
Your interior castle, your true home defined by canonized saints
Now seems ridiculous and futile in a world built on countless mistakes
You tried so hard to believe in what has been foretold
You educated yourself on the ways of old
Read every theory, every concept of time
In hopes of owning this struggle of mine
Using the darkness to bring out the light
Sometimes we are mistaken; sometimes we don’t want to be right
Despite our best intentions, everything has a cost
Over thinking the question until the meaning is lost
When the powers that be feel any type of threat
They will label the innocent a traitor and write it off as an expense
The ones that are put down will one day rise up
Its only a matter of time until enough is finally enough
When one mind can control a country, a mass of young hearts
Brainwashed by hypocrisy, the wound leaves a mark
A reminder of what transpired, a memory we would like to forget
But sometimes the things we avoid become the very thing we regret
