Down Time

By TakeMeAsIAm

Digital green neon
burns through my lashes
until closing my eyes becomes a useless chore.
I count the minutes that pass me by
before sleep takes a hold of my thoughts
and ties me down for the night.
Hours later the neon numbers convince me that I'm still awake
and that the Sandman just isn't coming for me anymore.
The stars have all burned down to the wick
and the wild sun's fire shatters my windows-
threatening to disturb you.
You: sleeping so softly by my side
unfazed by Nights chaos.
Maybe it's not the sleep that's vital...
but the serenity that Night brings.
I slide closer as your arm encircles my waist.
And as I finally close my eyes,
the neon numbers watch enviously
wishing they had some down time.
