Conquerers

By JingaBelle

As we step into the early morning
the mists rush to wrap around us
the only sounds are our feet hard at work
while the trees whisper their wisdom to us
I think whispering keeps the world asleep
so the trees can have their say
we stop to listen and I think he understands
but I don't and he doesn't say a word
as he urges me on with his purposeful heart
there are worlds we must conquer
we met mid-journey, fate's hand at work
he has proven over and again
to be my defender, entertainer, companion
he's earned my full trust, not freely given
which is a feat worthy of much merit
big, brown, soulful, eyes full of youth and age
fear is there but he's very brave, too
he's full of wonder at every thing in our world
he shows such tenderness and caring for others
at times he is full of bravado
even if he's a bit clumsy
a definitely worthy companion for this journey
I smile at him trying to tell him all this
with a flexed eyebrow he beckons me on
we are silent out of respect for the trees
It is not long before I sink back into my thoughts
I've loved others and lost before
Closed my heart off from love
When I first looked into those eyes
I knew he was mine and I was his
My heart began to flutter
the tickle felt so strange
I am so very grateful for this journey
even if early morning and cold aren't so pleasing
to commune with the trees
perhaps to learn their language
in the only time you can really hear them speak
the warmth of his body next to mine
making me brave in the dark
I love our quiet time together and wish for more
but the cold finds us and begins to bite
so I urge my valiant companion
back inside, we shed this secret world, back to life
where no one sees our world
where I am just a human and he is just a dog
But at least I know the truth
we're so much more than that
