Expiration Date

By Midnight Phoenix

Take this callous body and do to it what you want.
There is no emotion, no expectation, no faith left to sour.
The pool at my feet dried up long ago, so dry I’ve become.
My heart is your pincushion, my mind is your flower.

Forgive me for forgetting to smile, forgive me, FORGIVE ME!
I’m elastic, don’t you SEE? I’m yours to waste.
Sorry, I don’t understand the meaning behind the kiss.
I’ve learned to hold my tongue so long, I’ve forgotten how to taste.

Soon you’ll discard me upon realizing the pieces don’t fit.
They never will. The puzzle turned to ash long ago.
This shiny exterior is phony, nothing more than a replica.
Set me back on the shelf, didn’t you notice I’ve expired?

(I took a much different approach when writing this piece. Perhaps it’s evolution or perhaps I just wanted to try something new.)
