She watches and lives.
By cadymae
I grew up in a room that is no more
The radio station I played is gone too
My bff then, (before cells n txting)
has gone to Montauk and gone to seed
Odd then to say good morning just now
to the old lady from my childhood
who showed me her Cuban cardsharps.
I was 16 and she was old even then.
She was 70 when she and I finally tied a match.
How strange to speak with her again
here in my jubilee year.
She is truly old now.
103 said her 80 yo son.
She made her money smuggling silk stockings into Cuba I once heard.
I don't know if it was true.
She played a mean game of cards though.
My home for 17 years is gone.
She watched it being built.
She watched it knocked down.
She watched the 4 condos foreclose
a few years ago.
She watches and lives.
Time marches on.

Little histories that speak volumes in the personal memories of those times. What a great writer you are, cadymae, and I sincerely hope you're still around and with us.
