Goodbye

By Stephanie Sideways

I remember the first time that you said
you would have to turn your back
Your tortured soul had locked your heart in a hole
I dug
Let light in through a tiny crack

Then you were free and had a spark in your eye
I never had to say goodbye

I helped you live with you
It's what I was built to do
Your baggage on my flood
You left it unpacked, by the door

I recall the second time that you fell
pushed me away, for days I cried
I tried and tried to cool your own living hell
I nursed
But you burned from inside

Mistook my reflection for a spark in your eye
But still I didn't have to say goodbye

I helped you live with you
You knew it's what I had to do
Unpacked baggage creases deep
You were never mine to keep

And now I'm sitting with a hole in my heart
I couldn't save you like I needed
The you I loved didn't get to grow apart
Stuck fast
To its demons , though I pleaded

You washed away the spark in your eye
I kissed your cold check and said goodbye

You couldn't live with you
I think deep down I knew
Lost for good your baggage key
Destined not to stay with me.

I must apologize if my commenting on your work seems trite! Your words are from your soul therefore I feel it is a wonderful piece. The emotion is thick as you read, making the reader feel the writers intentions. Very well penned.

We can only do so much, and wishing won't make it happen, just forestall the inevitable. A sad tale many can relate to, and I for one, long ago. Thanks Stephy.
