The Wolf's Plea

By deadlyangel27

Among this tribe of noble men
Many people found their end
With war afoot and strength so little
All were left with hope so brittle
And in the face of ice and fire
And situations deemed too dire
None were left to break the fall

None were left to hear their call
One morning
Cloaked in snow and cold
I waited outside my village alone

And waited, so patient,
For the wolf’s quiet call,
My nerves on edge,
My mind in awe
Silently, he walked afoot
And met me, only meters apart
His eyes penetrating
His eyes serenading
And, silently, he touched my heart
One small whine, my hand extends
To touch the fur that knows War’s sin
And, easily, he creeps to me
Silently holding his pack’s soft plea
And I wait
And wait
Shock still
For his movement
For his
That holds me in awe
While I wait for the wolf
And the plea of his call
Peace, he whines
And I oblige
On my knees,
The snow like ice
A word that makes us whole
In the touch of a heart
In the breath of a soul
And even in hardship
With the wolf in to beg
The War is still raging
And tainting our heads
Never again
The wolf’s voice whispers
I can hear his thoughts
In silver flickers
We are an ally,
While you are a friend
And peace is the word
That whispers again
War is war
And death is feared
And, though we fear,
We still abhor
The dark, the death
Like omnivores
Of the night and its galore
Stretches like elastic words
When the wolf meets my gaze
With a quiet purr
And, flashing before me
I see his world
In black and white
In perfect words
And the wolf leaves me
His fur disappearing from my reach
And walks away, back turned
Like trust is no issue
And I wait
Standing in awe
As he silently says
I will miss you
His eyes alight
His fur shining bright
But not so bright as to blind
And I feel the tension
Melting like snow
As our bond is redefined
In light and in darkness
In good and in sin
In black and in white
Where changes bring the night
And we love what we abhor
In love and in hate
In peace and in war.

"For this is the law of the jungle, as old and as true as the sky. And the wolf that obeys it may prosper, as the wolf that breaks it must die. Like the vine that circles the tree, the law runneth forward and back, for the strength of the pack is the wolf and the strength of the wolf is the pack" - Rudyard Kipling (got most of it right I think). Reminded me of that poem.
