I Am Slave

By Malcholm Dark

Steal me away from my land...

Hunted and captured then put on a slave ship
Locked down in the cargo hold, a one way trip.
And one third of us dead as we finally dock
Welcome to oppression and to the selling block.

Sold to a white colored man...

All of my children shall be born into slavery
No living heritage except for the shame I see.
When I look to the stars my tears fall in waves
I pray for my people, for a land without slaves.

Whip me bloody, I shall behave...

Tied to a whipping post, now I will pay
For being resistant on the wrong day.
I will try to be strong, try to withstand
My soul remains free, break me if you can.
.

.
.
.
.
Steal me away from my land
Sold to a white colored man.
Whip me bloody, I shall behave
I am property, I am slave.

This reminds of how people settle into the reality of their surroundings, doesn't mean we won't try to change them and doesn't mean we won't pay the cost of changing or fighting them. I enjoyed this write, even thou the thought of someone being enslaved and beaten to conform angers me.

I couldn't possibly imagine such torment, to be auctioned off like some rare antiquity. Being controlled by someone with no remorse. A very gripping piece my friend, it seemed to capture the pain felt back then. Scholar
