Beast From The Alimentary Canal

By Malcholm Dark

Perceive me, release me, reap me
Turn away in repulsion
As I weak havoc around thee...

Unfriendly, towering steel and concrete structures
Reaching, touching the top of the sky-way above.
Within, a vertical transportation system
Elevators, carrying the multitude upward.
The elevator lobbies are filled with people
Waiting for a chime and the doors to roll open.
The elevator is quickly filled to its' limit
Buttons are pushed, first stop the 57th floor.

Quickly the air inside turns thick and robust
A mixture of perfume, Cologne and mouthwash.
Thoughts are focused upon their destinations
Or perhaps where they would rather be now.
Casual, non-caring looks and stares
An occasional glance at one's watch.
Speakers discharge an ungodly array of music
Reinvented melodies from the 1980s.

Suddenly, there's a generating excess of gas
Silent but deadly, a casual break in the wind.
Faces turn grave--eyes darting back and forth
Who would do this, who would dare do this now?
There are sophomoric giggles from the men
But the laughter passes all too quickly.
The moment seems most unjust and unbearable
Nothing matters but the next breath of fresh air.

A growing evil takes root within the elevator
As kerchiefs and pinched noses swiftly become the norm.
A man covers himself with his jacket
He cries out in despair, "jesus h. christ!"
Intelligence prevails near the control panel
A woman pushes the button for the next floor.
All eyes are fixated upon the numbers above
What are only moments now become an eternity.

The elevator stops, the doors roll open
A frantic mob escapes the terror within.
One man turns down the hallway, gagging
He pukes up his danish and coffee.
The people waiting outside chuckle with amusement
They turn and start to fill the empty elevator.
The beast rises up and rears its' ugly head
The malodorous stench holds them all at bay.

"Ding!" The other three elevators open
The crowd quickly disappears inside them.
All doors close, three elevators move on
The forth remains suspended and shut down.
Invisible claws extend between, opening the doors
The growing turgidity of the beast is unstoppable.
This must be an X-file, contact Mulder and Scully
Exorcise the beast, deliver us from certain death.

A janitor pushes a large cart into the lobby
He sniffs the air, the beast moves in for the attack.
He grabs a can of antiseptic spray, country aroma
The janitor advances, spraying wildly into the air.
The beast recoils and rolls back into the elevator
Screams of death reverberate throughout the skyscraper.
The janitor smiles and disappears down the hallway
The elevator doors close, it continues upward.

The scene fades to black
An eerie whistling is heard
Theme music from the X-files...
I believe!

You have just instilled a fear of elevators like no other lol. At least the janitor was there to save the day. Now he has to clean up the danish and coffee puke. Kept me reading to the end, *whistles the X-files theme* Scholar
