Snapshots

By Rachel

10 o'clock realizations of 6 o'clock mistakes.
Someone piece me back together
for your words are my poison
ripping me apart again and again.
I can't seem to help myself
[hoping they're not
and praying they are - meant for me.]

And I shouldn't be thinking of you
[any/this]way
but I'm weak.
It's hard to move on
with your eyes -
your concrete shoes - holding me down.
I'm sure this wasn't your intention
but as we've learned
even the best of intentions are wrong
sometimes.

----------------------------------------

Like a snapshot in my mind:

You, Glistening perfection in a concrete jungle.
Me, trembling hands trying to break through the rubble.

I was so nervous I couldn't speak.
I wanted more than anything to be in your arms
and then I was.
I saw the reflection of myself in your eyes
and I was perfect.
The world around us ceased to exist.
There was only you
and me
and your fingers through my hair.

----------------------------------------

And even now - light years later;
dreams of you wake me with a smile
as I wipe a tear from my cheek
[the one you once held so dearly]
I count the opportunities we're missing.

It all boils down to one thing:
We all make mistakes.
And I excell at it.

- - - - -- - - - - -- - - - -

You swore you'd return and I knew you would.
I mourned for your loss and walked away
not knowing where I was going
but going just the same.
And the world around me shattered
and I couldn't speak once again
I'll never be enough for you
Why even try to pretend?

- - - - - -- - - - -- - - -- - -

I tried to replace you once.
But a candle can never compare
to a shooting star.

-------------

Every morning I wake up wishing you were there.

I keep my regrets in a glass on the nightstand
it's overflowing now.
I bought a second glass
with your name etched on the side.

----- ----- ------- --------- ---------

What do you do when
your life can be summed up by a question.

What was I thinking?

-

I could have had the world
we DID have the world.
And I thought you deserved more.
I can't give you the universe
I can only give you myself
That will never be enough.
So I left.

.

Internal struggles are exhausting
and I fight for each breath
knowing we'll never share another sunrise.
I can't stand the thought of living every day
without you at my side
but I know I put myself here.

And I'll deal with it.

------------------- ----- - - --

I'm trying to get over you
but it's hard to forget
when you don't want to.

"Let the poets cry themselves to sleep
And all their tearful words will turn back into steam

And I never thought this life was possible
You’re the yellow bird that I’ve been waiting for"
