Whatever Happened? (Childhood Innocence)

By darkness_descends

Whatever happened to childhood innocence
The happiness that comes from the bliss of ignorance
The evils of the world unable to be seen
Invisible to the untainted mind of the young
A virginal intellect unable to percieve
The rampant corruption of the human souls
Or the greed that fuels it
People hungry for power and social status
Eagerly willing to discard their beliefs and morals
For a high enough price and fancy enough toys

Whatever happened to a childs' light heart
Not weighted with lust and lies
Delighted with the simplicity of a sunset
Or running through the sprinklers
Left in awe staring at the stars
Not yet bewildered by the complexities of life
Or hindered by the inescapable responsibilities
Not required to work for money or necessities
All needs attended to without question

Whatever happened to a childs' zest for life
Anticipation of another day
Fades into oblivion
As death consumes a mind void of naivete
Knives become toys
Blood becomes bliss
Lacerations invade wrists
A beating heart slows to a whisper
And another child dies

Whatever happened?
