the negotiation of my heartbeats

By KittyStryker

i'm not allowed to fall in love with you.

we've discussed this before, and the conclusion has been
that lust is acceptable terms
and that love carries too many old battle scars
to be worth the struggle and the ache.

but.

sadly hearts do not understand words like "no"
and "unreasonable"- hearts stare at these words
with head cocked to one side quizzically

the words they know are "yes", "now",
and "forever"... words i had sworn to rip out of my dictionary.

i'm not allowed to fall in love with you.
so please excuse me if i trip sometimes
over the shoelaces of desire and wishing.

i should be all right
as long as i don't skin my dreams
on the cold hard concrete of this reality.

This was beautiful. The metaphor was simple and sweet, with nostalgia toward times that are long passed. "The cold hard concrete of reality" I thought it was bitterly sweet.

the ending verse is spectacular. I found this to be quite intriguing since I've never successfully negotiated with my heart. It does whatever the hell it wants.. I have no say so. Though I like it that way.

is it bad that this poem could equally be used for my ex as for my current? is there a trend?...

Lovely word use, etc...but the subject matter fills me with sadness somehow. Much of the "reality" we live in can actually be of our own creation. Anyway, lovely flow and your personality shines through, as always. Ciao, T/S Scholar
