A Lamentable Outcome

By RaheemaFKM

You threw your dreams away before you even had them, and you sat amiably still as reality tied up your hands and cuffed your ankles to the chair
Were you surprised then, to see your life—or rather, the dreadfully common, disgustingly neutral thing you nurtured and called your life—pass you over?
If you were, you had no right to be; as you made no great effort to take hold of your life from the beginning
For you it was always by the book, written by some famously intellectual drone who laid out the map to your future
The only future you were expected to have; the only path which followed the tracks to success
Venturing into the unknown was never an appealing prospect to you; too many frightening variables and unforeseeable obstacles for you to brave the realm of possibilities
And so, you presumed yourself rational, and reasoned your way into a cage
You never bothered to flex your wings, so naturally—they fell off
And now that you’ve come to realize they’re gone, you wonder…just how high you might have once flown
