The Shadow

By RaheemaFKM

Behind the brightest light there remains a shadow
Always reaching for me, gradually tempting me near

I fear it has tainted my thoughts and poisoned my dreams

Often I wake maddened, desperately yearning to be consumed by the flames licking my skin, burning my treacherous heart

I can no longer trust my mouth, for it lies compulsively now

The light has grown dimmer in my eyes, and the shadow is looming, disrupting the world’s balance and tipping the scales of my sanity

It whispers with the voice of temptation; It beckons me further nigh and tears me away from the reality of a life, once recognizable as mine own

Falling through the gaps of my fingers

No longer at all do I see the light, but for the shadow obscuring my view

No longer do I crave the flames, for ever they rage, consuming anew

No longer do I awaken, but revel in the night

Eternal now is the shadow; long forgotten is the light
