A couple bars (of broken bottles.)

By Candy Cain

Breaking open bottles
with a brain just ripe for baking

taking these painkillers
is still just as painstaking as the first time it happened.

opened up the cabinet,
played it off like an accident,
reached a hand in for the habit,
now she’s falling between the cracks of the establishment.

playing every note from the bottle like it’s my last symphony
and treating every lovers kiss like they’re my Judas, it’s a self fulfilling prophecy

The direction it took was not what I expected from the title, but the construction was swift and the imagery evocative. The self fulfilling prophecy at the end was deep, tragic insight that leaves a realistic fatalism to the beauty of the piece. Exquisite.
