Lie to Us (villanelle)

By dwells

Those reoccurring lies we love the best
We validate them with applause and cheers
The ones that make us hopeful, proud, our blessed

Assured that we are righteous in our quest
Contrarians are silenced with our jeers
Those reoccurring lies we love the best

For gravitas we beat a gentle breast
Surrounded by the children and their tears
The ones that make us hopeful, proud, or blessed

How virtuous the sinner who confessed
Our swords become our plows, but not our spears
Our deadly smears, a dagger in the chest

Defeat will guarantee we are depressed
Prestige and power lost, our greatest fears
The rich shall feel the pain of the oppressed

No prison hold or constable arrest
Our spokesmen who are wise beyond their years
Those reoccurring lies we love the best
The ones that make us hopeful, proud, or blessed

A/N: debated on usingĀ "reassuring" versus "reoccurring" (above) and both apply - cheers!
