Back to the Branches

By dwells

No hunter knows how dangerous
the elephant when treed.
No more the docile target of
your vitriolic screed.
Forgiving when you spilled their blood;
they long to watch you bleed.
*
*
For many years you plotted how
you planned to seize control.
Fair youth arise, ye lord of flies,
become the regent mole.
The trunk was slowly rotted for
dominion was your goal.

His benefices touted,
dedicated to “the way”.
The wealthy soon besotted
by the powers they obey.
Mendacity was rampant
as your labels ruled the day.

How darkly flown his mystery
to history, unknown.
A shadow stretched across the veldt;
your minds were chiseled stone.
When one defied his litany -
you flayed him for the crone.

Unwelcome to our jungle home
above the furtive swamp.
The high ground is the capitol
where braying donkeys romp.
The rhythm of their jack boots is
a syncopated stomp.
*
*
No chauffer was available
to drive them to their knees.
Their tusks surrendered hopefully –
a gesture to appease.
Umbrella stands* for foreign lands;
they trumpet from the trees.

    There`s much to be said about those branches. This is such an eye-opening poem; makes you think, and not in a positive way. You`re work deserves high praise.
