body of evidence

By georgelstein

body of evidence

past red tin roofs and barns lost to original purpose
defying the fog at dawn, awaiting the arrival of an imperious sun
rickety cars on dusty, rubber tires roll across the fruited plane
ants through fields of chiaroscuro, harvest-browns
where ancestors resigned to fatigue and weariness
the radio drones news from the wars
still waged in the opposite world
in irregular spasms, a dog barks to mark time
measure for measure, in centimetered disaffections
will is surrendered and we succumb to the loneliness

the sun's fingers filter through bare branches
to claw at pale hands and puffy cheeks
products of an impetuous courtship,
a new litter of barn cats makes their debut
there are new leaves in the old gutters
tired, green, and brown and crunchy leaves
screaming orange and pornographic red ones
children are scattered to the winds of chance
to seek the love and adoration of lesser gods
with a fork still dripping with tomatillo salsa
the veil of innocence is pressed to pierce
eyes unaccustomed to enlightenment, slowly
but surely, this patient sociopath,
life is killing us all

As an aside, if you haven't yet checked out the work of The Dybbuk, I think you might appreciate his work. His writing is filled with worthwhile philosophical meanderings about life. Again, good to see a new piece from you and I hope you have had some success in getting published. It can be a political game centered around "who you know", but you are definitely a worthy candidate! The current winner of the Man Booker Prize, Marlon James, had his first book rejected over 70 times... I will always hold that as a personal encouragement to persevere! : ) Scholar

"eyes unaccustomed to enlightenment, slowly but surely, this patient sociopath, life is killing us all" - excellent closing to this piece. I love this work, it flows so well and contains the enlightened view from an armchair placed amongst rustbelt scenery. Very cool vibe to this one. Additionally, I suspect we are at a similar season of life and the hopefulness, observation, and philosophizing is tempered by the reality of the life that is seen, felt and experienced. That is how is speaks to me anyway. As always, your new works are anxiously anticipated and eagerly devoured! Ciao, T/S Scholar

Ty for these kind words, your encouragement is greatly appreciated. Where I am from, NW Indiana, we are all still falling here, about halfway to destiny so far....
