Endless Restoration
By TropicalSnowstorm
the execution of an immortal is the
existential version of a train to nowhere
my arms became tired hours ago after slashing
through this man’s neck repeatedly only to
see the wound heal behind the moving blade
giving the illusion I am slicing into a ghost
I wonder who this punishment is actually
intended to make miserable as sweat starts
to pool while I work to dislodge my sword
now stuck after being thrust through his chest
for the victors fortune and war go hand
in hand
but my wish to be done with this task so I can
grab my share of conquest’s bounty will never
come to pass while this guy is still breathing
beauty sometimes masks more troubling
truths beneath the surface and childhood
memories fade then reform to obscure
recollections of faces we would rather forget
now my memory sparks as I realize I know this man
his name is Pride and we have both been here before

Quite the dilemma you conjured up for this challenge TS and the "who is really being punished", most insightful. Did you try to cleave the head with a single blow I wonder? (works with zombies) - well done and best of luck.
