A Meditation

By Jonas

I had a delightful meditation today.
I am on the levy by the Sacramento river near the airport.
It was a wonderful place to pass the night.

This morning I was visited by a fair number of honey bees. I used to hate them and fear them. Now I love them and fear them.
I have been making fruitful attempts to shed the fear and just live the love.

So I sit to meditate, start a timer and tell myself that even if a bee lands on me I will continue my practice of body awareness. As I began I felt an insect land on my hand. My concentration broke for a moment but I didn't flinch. I sent love to the bee and wished it life and fulfillment. Then another and another landed on my hands and leg. Soon there were six!

I never moved but was in deep conflict internally. I acknowledged my fear and smiled at it. I moved toward peace wondering how in the hell I was going to get out of this without being stung.

I settled...

I brought my mind to the warmth of the sun and the cool of the breeze.
I smiled internally and my skin tingled.
I opened my eyes 47 seconds too soon and found
that all
those
BEES!
Were nothing more than
little
black
flies

Interesting observations of depth in a setting attainable to anyone. Pop culture Buddhism practiced in sight of an airport...deep lessons learned through interaction with flies. Your intuition and well wishes did not make them bees, but an adventure doesn't really require us to exactly achieve what we set out to do, does it? We deal with what lands on us, we use the mechanisms we have based on what we know, and we emerge. We can either emerge swinging at flies, or smiling to ourselves sheepishly after enjoying the warmth of the sun and the cool of the breeze. Reading this, my smile was more than internal. Glad to see something new! Ciao, T/S Scholar

...fear is a tremendous con if you buy into it, capable of outfitting a mere fly w/a stinger...
