Real and Unreal

By Stranger

She lays a dagger on the ground before me
“This,” she tells me, “is a symbol of love”
“It is also, the source of my power”
And I believe her
And she loves me

I fasten a collar around her throat
“This,” I tell her, “is how I have been taught to love”
“It is also, how I will protect you”
And she believes me
And I love her

We move through each other like light through smoke
Changing nothing
“I will always love who I believe you to be,” we tell each other
And we try to forgive the illusion that binds and separates us

And we cry for the children born and unborn

Thank you for still posting once in a while. That third stanza is one of the most perfectly stripped-down poetic truths I've read in a very long time. It's like one of Rodin's hand sculptures, real as flesh but bite-sharp to the touch. Wonderful.

I like the way you live and die in your words. Calculating response for words and sighs that like the pain. You know just what to say. You like being ugly. Bad noise is sometimes the greatest love song.
