April '53

By cadymae

A slate afternoon of late April '53
lights the side of the low-slung hi-fi

the squat angled
                               fake teak
                                                   legs
                     mirrored the settee
doubled the line of her pencil-skirt

sensible loafers all the rage
but the missing heels
an echo of the same A-line.

Avocado and princess pink
around the bend of time ahead
the grey light finds kinship
in the beiges and ecrus and
washed-out tones of the late
modern industrial decor of
high-rise Manhattan
April '53.

Brubeck and Desmond
    make the air
         in which
   the dust motes
       swirl
seem to hint at
     intersecting lines
with cross-beams

making faint "A's
that post-echo the

art deco all about
    in the room,
    in the furniture,
    in the skyline
outlined through the
murky picture window

You can still see her there
if you look through
a particular song
on a certain public station
on a slate afternoon.
