Sorry Can't Right Betrayal

By Lylani

It wasn't so bad
She cried and shouted
The wind changed
She rose above
It could have been so much worse
She could have made me suffer more
But she saw just one mistake, not our end
She looked me in the eye with calm devotion
So tomorrow came and went

But I never knew the damage I did
I didn't feel her take her heart from my hand
Or hear it shatter on the floor beneath my feet
I thought "Sorry" was enough to right betrayal
But it was her
closing the door
In silent dignity

Now after all this time
She looks me in the eye
Casts away the mask I never knew she wore
The fragments of her heart
Like fallen autumn leaves
delicate and broken
She screams
an agony not diluted by time
A pain that would wrench the heartstrings of immortals

I know
I
did this
to her

I cannot comprehend the strength it took
To hold those tears and kiss my lips
Knowing they had caressed another
But she is a hundred times the woman I thought she could be
And I'm less than a fraction of the man I should be

So when with gasping breaths she begs
"why don't you love me enough?"
I have no answer worthy of this angel

Well written from a male perspective.... like telling someone you love just not quite enough... that you love them just not quite enough.... maybe.... so close, so close.... and still, walk away. There are no words worthy, no. Thanks for sharing.
