Life In Paradox City

By Malcholm Dark

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

We live our lives in a paradox
And compare them all to metaphors.

To the poet, this is the sweet life
Poetry--It's so damn easy to write.

If there is an exception to every rule
Then every rule must have one exception
There's always an exception to the rule
Except to the exception of the rule
Which is, of itself an excepted exception of the rule.

Has your life become a paradox
Or does paradoxes mirror life?

When baby won't eat something detestable
You throw away their food and replace it.
Why not throw away the baby, for a new one?

Where does religion fall into our lives?
Some of us believe and some of us do not.

If you can't have good without evil and vise-versa
Then without evil there can be no good in the world.

Religion is not a difficult concept
It relies on two things: faith and belief.

Have you ever seen God?
Neither have I
But that doesn't mean God doesn't exist.

Have you ever seen a million dollars?
Neither have I
But that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

If you have faith in your beliefs
Then you can possess tomorrow
What you can not see today.

Which reminds me of a fable once told me...

There was a tragic accident that involved three nuns
They found themselves standing in front of Heaven's gate.

There was ST. Peter with the book of life
Checking everyone before they could enter.

He began with the first nun and said,
"Tell me of a sin you have never confessed."

"In the performance of my duties..." she began.
"I saw a mans penis;
And for a moment I was consumed with passion."

Then ST. Peter said, "we were made imperfect;
And passion is not a mortal sin."

He pointed to a large marble font, filled with water.
"Behold the holiest of water, blessed by God Almighty;
Wash your eyes, then take your place in heaven."

Peter then asked the second nun the same question
"Tell me of a sin you have never confessed."

"In the performance of my duties..." she began.
"I held a mans penis;
And for a time I was consumed by passion."

His answer to the second nun was the same,
"We were made imperfect and passion is not a sin."

"Wash your hands within the holy water,
And take your place in heaven."

While ST. Peter and the second nun conversed
The third nun had slipped by them and stood by the font.

She took out a small cup and filled it with water
ST. Peter saw her and said, "what are you doing?"

"I'm not taking any chances," she replied quickly.
Then poured the water in her mouth and gargled.

Paradoxes and more paradoxes
Throw in some metaphors for good measure.

Why is the night sky black
If there is an infinity of stars?

The thing we learn from history
Is we don't learn from history.

If everything John says is a lie
And John says, "I'm lying;"
Then John must be telling the truth
But John can't tell the truth
Because everything John says is a lie.

If I've left you with anything
Allow me to leave you with this...

You are not the one we hoped to see
Nor the one we thought you could be.

You have no social integrity
Letting us down with regularity.

Get away from us entirely
Go live out your life impiously.

You're condemned to a life of obscurity
So carefree, full of love and absurdity.
.
.
.
Better to have lived in obscurity
Than to have never lived at all.

It's raining
But I don't believe that it is.

I'd heard the nun joke before..... ya know, in logic those paradoxical statements can be sorted out through second order predicate logic whereby one distinguishes the claims about the subject from the medium for making the claim... thus the expression itself is understood as not self contradictory but rather being a member of a different class (set theory) than the class of that which it asserts a property.... just a thought :) on the other hand.... there is no conscious life without dogma.. belief, faith, asserting without proof, expectations of future (what is not yet or not at all or may never be).... but, of course, that inherent state of asserting without evidential foundation or inductive reasoning is still a far cry from asserting some omi this or omni that or eternal such and such.... fun read, very thoughtful.... the joke.... haha, I like the nun joke.... get thee to a nunnery! cheers, mate!

Mind breaking and brilliant all the same, spinning around in circles never felt so good. The nun bit was classic, and overall a well written piece. Paradoxical logic just makes me all ones and zeroes. Write onward my friend. Scholar
