Direct Address: Cherry Vanilla

By Demosthenes

You knew me
Far too long
You made my smile a constant
Far too long
You melted my heart with a glance
Far too long
Not to know

It took me seventeen days
To find a tube of cherry vanilla lip gloss
That felt like whipped cream
And smelled like heaven
And tasted like you

I put it on every morning for five months thereafter
No one knew why my eyes teared up when I ate anything
I could taste your kiss
And you left me breathless
Despite your absence
And I still loved you

Loved you for your kiss still leaving me breathless
Loved you for your kiss. Breathless.
Loved you for your kiss
Leaving me

YOU LEFT ME!

How are you here?
After close to half a year has passed
You should be banging some other girl by now
So you can break her heart too

"I still love you."

You expect me to be able to hear that?
God, how can four words be so pretty?
Go over to that table.
Pick up the little pink tube.
What flavor is it?

"Cherry vanilla."

Exactly.
It's you my dear
It feels like whipped cream
And smells like heaven
And tastes like you.
And it kept me alive for five months
Isn't that special?

Shall we reminisce for a moment?
Let me do the talking
Hell, we might as well discuss us

The pretty little things that meant nothing
But made me love you
That you always
/Always/
Did, without fail
Because back in the day
When we were so in love
Nothing else even pretended to matter

I loved you for the pretty little things
For being able to play with my hair without pulling it
For kissing the bridge of my nose
Instead of the tip
For running your fingers down my arm to help me sleep
For always
Always
Using my name when you told me
You loved me more than air
Or more than orange cream savers
Or life
Or anything

You always used my name
To let me know it was me
And it made me so selfish
But so damned happy
So who cares?

SNAP!
You're back here
Standing at my pretty little coffee table
Holding a pretty little lip gloss tube
Telling me you still love me
And looking… like a pretty little idiot

You always used my name
And I was yours forever
And ever…
And ever…

"I still love you."

Such a pretty sound
Never thought four words could be so pretty

You always used my name
And tasted
Like cherry vanilla

Four words

Too late
What a shame
It should've been five
And that tube ran out last night
