Anniversary

By Beautiful Incidental

How can escape from emptiness be nothingness?
One in the same...
How long did you finger the pistol
Before it was lulled by the brain?
How blurred were the images of memory?
Tainted acidic red...
Transformed faces into shadows -
Which one remained?
Did you close your eyes,
Utter her name,
Tap on the trigger, then refrain,
Hear the birds in the barn sing again?
Did you step to the door to decide...
Would it hurt more to live or to die?
Was the landscape scarred
And tarnished by grief,
Years of anguish,
And proof of defeat?
Did the magnetism of nonexistence
Force the door to close,
Push you into the darkness,
Turn the air to cold?
Were your fears lifted or did they stay,
Memories cease or did they play...
As you lifted the pistol
And fell into the hay?
Brain silenced by the bullet...
Now nothing remains.
