Free Fall

By Dilated View

I walk through life sleepy eyed
And paralyzed
By an overwhelming sense
That I'll find comfort while disguised
From the ever present hint
Of a change that never comes
While cloaked inside, indifferent
To the rise of my mind's sun
My heart beats slowly
Like a hibernating lie
That speaks truth I don't acknowledge
I don't even think to try
If I shrink from living
Does the world realize I'm there
Or has it given up completely
Since I never seem aware
You'll hear no sound
From this never ending let down
Who always sees what's needed
But who seems to lack the know how
I have a dollar
If you can spare some change
Of scenery before I cease
To try to find my way

At birth arrived
With a pocket full of dreams
And a heart full of hope
That is fraying at the seams

Not unfamiliar with rocky landings
I crash repeatedly without a clue
That the air cannot withstand me

I walk through life energized
But terrified
By an overwhelming urgency
To take wing and fly
Time slips through fingers
Like the crumbs without the treat
And so I nibble without tasting
The design of my defeat
My brain is scattered
Like the answers that it seeks
Because it doesn't know the questions
So its outlook's growing bleak
If I give up on caring
Will the world see I've withdrawn
Or just leave me here, complacent
In a place that knows no dawn
You'll hear no sighs
From the man in this disguise
Who claims to want direction
But who stares with vacant eyes
I have a vision
Of a place where hope is found
Where I'd like to be before death sees
Me planted in the ground

the lines "Or just leave me here, complacent / In a place that knows no dawn" really resonated with me somehow - i like the way this piece builds tension and then winds down sort of sadly - brilliant and beautiful

  • A former member wrote: hope is so delicate; so wanting....your words illuminate that need for hope, and the sometimes tragic self.inflicting act of hoping.........daring..and fitting.

  • A former member wrote: This was an amazing piece Ryan... I think that most of us can identify with your plight. Well written man, thank you for sharing this.
