I Have Become Death, Destroyer Of Worlds

By Malcholm Dark

The flight of the Enola Gay

Across the sky of dawning light
Trails of blue and red, trails of white.
Above our painted clay-tiled roofs
Came the thundering of fire hooves.
They rode across the dawning sky, rode across like gods
The angels of death dancing high, within their steel pods.

With the rising of the sun something evil this way comes...
--We watched the horror in silent awe
never understanding the things we saw.
--Then sirens cried out, "death comes collecting today!"
Beware, a steel winged avenger...
the flight of the Enola Gay!

                     The sun rose twice

Pain and death, god or devil when the Enola Gay flew by
Pain and death, god or devil fell upon us from on high.
Silence for all blackness for some when Armageddon came
A burst of light consumed the day and put the sun to shame!
Black shadows from the flash, burnt upon these walls
The remnants of our dead, hear their anguished calls.

With the rising of the sun something evil this way comes...
--We watched the horror in silent awe
never understanding the things we saw.
--Then say good-bye to our land of rice
for on that day...
                                 the sun rose twice!

                        The dragon's breath

A mushroom serpent rose above us, clawing higher and higher
Explosive heat-waves within its' breath gave birth to storms of fire.
Its' atomic talons swept our city and laid it to the ground
Only burning remains of rubble and bodies were left around!
From atop the mountain I could see the fury of raging fires
A hunger of orange burning bright gave way to funeral pyres.

With the rising of the sun something evil this way comes...
--We watched the horror in silent awe
never understanding the things we saw.
--Then bid farewell to the ones in death
who fell prey to...
                               the dragon's breath!

                        Our tears in the dark

Come black rain the color of mourning, with its' own damnation
Because within that rain came the legacy of fatal radiation.
From the holocaust came an unearthly procession of the dying
The living dead waiting to die--no moans, screams or crying!
The hand of Death lay upon us, feel the wrath of impending doom
Thousands of bodies line the streets, the city a massive tomb.

With the rising of the sun something evil this way comes...
--We watched the horror in silent awe
never understanding the things we saw.
--Then no more memories, no tombstones in mark
fading into oblivion...
                                       like tears in the dark!

                  An epiloge for the damned

The earth then opened and the skies above shattered
Within that instant hung eternity as time stood still.
We fell to our knees and cried out, "behold the moment!
For surely this must be the will of God!"
But there, standing before us,  a man--keeper of the fire
And his voice called down onto us all, resounding,
"I have become death, destroyer of worlds!"

The words that flow upon the page, strange at first sight yet many meanings are just below the surface. I love the flowing, the reading and all. I am a mere ant to this person. I cannot write as good as this and I do try by best and i wish someone would look at me and say good job well done but it seems i have more work to do before this day is through.

I agree that our atomic weaponry should not be forgotten. This write is incredible. It made me think about humanity and what we do. The events you wrote of make me ashamed of the human race. Well done Sir.

*Hanging over the edge of my chair* Wow..This was very suspenseful, intense and eye opening and it kept my attention going throughout I kept wanting more. From part to part It flowed so well and the visuals moved with ease and I liked how you made it lyrical to.Fun and good overall read. Thanks.

Yes a very impressive write, not only could I see the menacing mushroom cloud on the horizon, or feel the radiation entering my body, but also felt the panic, and fear of such an event, I really enjoyed this write, thanks for sharing. Scholar

Thanks man, when I read all about this from people who were there, I was just floored... I just had to share all of that with you all in a poem...

A powerful and haunting work to read. Great flow and visuals used throughout. I could feel the sting and the heat and the blistering skin, you took me right to the moment. Think "dawing" should be "dawning". This felt very lyrical to me. Nicely written.
